The Premiership side have received over £25 million from the sale of Wayne Rooney to Manchester United and although they have only received £10 million up front, manager David Moyes has been told that he will receive a substantial amount in order to strengthen the squad in January.

Thornton has struggled with injuries and a loss of form with Sunderland so far this season but is highly rated by the club and it is not known whether or not Mick McCarthy would be keen to see the youngster leave the Stadium of Light.

The Drogheda lad, who joined Sunderland from Tranmere Rovers on a tribunal-imposed £250,000 fee two years ago, has started just one game for the Black Cats so far this season, despite performing well on each of his substitute appearances.

Thornton’s agent Lee Payne has revealed that Everton officials had made inquiries about the player before the transfer window closed on Tuesday, but he also pointed out that other clubs were interested in the midfielder.

"I know there is interest from Everton in Sean and that they like him as a player," said Payne. "I spoke to an Everton official about Sean a while ago and they watched him in action against Chester last week in the Carling Cup. Sean is a talented lad and there is interest from several clubs in him.
