Dunne is still improving – Pearce
May 5, 2007
Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce insists club captain Richard Dunne is about to enter the peak years of his career.
Dunne lifted the club’s Player of the Year award for the third successive season earlier this week.
But Pearce feels the City fans have yet to see the best of their skipper.
He said: “I feel Richard is still improving and becoming more mature as a player. There is no question in my mind.
“It is an incredible achievement to be named as the supporters’ choice for three seasons in succession, but his all-around play for the past three years has been outstanding.
“He has embraced the captaincy fantastically well, and the one thing I would say is that he can only get better. In the position he plays a lot of it boils down to knowledge of the game and how you mature as a person.
“Richard is only 27 years old but has played a phenomenal amount of games and got great experience.
“What I have to do now is build on those leadership qualities, and keep building on my relationship with him, so that next year he takes on even more responsibility as captain of the club. If he does that then he can only get better.”
Dunne has been linked with a summer move to Newcastle United and Liverpool, but Pearce is expected to resist any attempt to cash in on the Ireland defender.
