League defends Sunderland presentation debacle
May 8, 2007
The English Football League has defended the decision NOT to present Sunderland with the Coca-Cola Championship winners’ trophy after the final game of the season on Sunday.
Black Cats manager Roy Keane, whose side lifted the Championship crown with a 5-0 win at Luton Town, labelled the failure to have a presentation ceremony as “an absolute disgrace”.
But spokesman John Nagle insists the decision was taken purely on safety issues after consultation with the police.
He said: “Representations from the relevant authorities, including Bedfordshire Police, ruled out any possibility of the Championship trophy being presented to Sunderland at Luton yesterday due to spectator safety issues.
“In any event, had it been possible for the League to make presentations at away grounds this weekend the Championship trophy would actually have been at Preston, as Birmingham City were ahead going into the final weekend.
“Therefore no presentation would have taken place at Kenilworth Road anyway.”
