Sunderland linked with Irish old and young
May 14, 2007
Sunderland manager Roy Keane has been linked with veteran former Northern Ireland international Neil Lennon and young Republic defender Paul McShane as the transfer rumours gather pace ahead of the summer business.
Keane’s former Celtic teammate Lennon spoke at the weekend of the possibility of landing a move to the Stadium of Light, where he could take up a player-coach role.
The 35-year-old, who will definitely leave Parkhead this summer, said: "Sunderland would appeal to me greatly but it’s only hearsay at the moment.
“I might have a year or two left in me playing and I’ll hopefully look to the management side after that. Coaching does appeal to me but not just yet because I haven’t got all the necessary qualifications.”
McShane, meanwhile, reportedly came under the Keane microscope during Sunday’s Coca-Cola Championship semi-final play-off between Wolves and West Bromwich Albion.
The 20-year-old Ireland international was a youngster at Manchester United towards the end of Keane’s Old Trafford career, and has progressed well in his first season at West Brom, during which time he has won his first five senior caps.
