Seagulls star offers Hawkins support
November 13, 2008
Brighton defender Tommy Elphick has lent his support to Seagulls colleague and former eircom League of Ireland star Colin Hawkins.
Hawkins won League of Ireland titles with St Patrick’s Athletic, Bohemians and Shelbourne before rejoining first club Coventry two years ago.
The 31-year-old Galway man failed to make an impression at the Ricoh Arena and joined Brighton during the summer – but found himself the subject of jeering fans’ anger after scoring an own goal in the weekend’s 3-3 FA Cup first round draw with Hartlepool United.
Elphick, however, is convinced that his defensive comrade can put those problems behind him.
He said: “Colin is a terrific pro and he cares. He is one of the few pros you would find in on a day off and it hurts him when he scores an own goal like that or something goes against him so I think the fans have got to realise that people don’t make mistakes on purpose and we are all trying to do our best.
“Players have bad patches of form but Colin is a great player. He has played at a very high level and has played many games now so I am sure he will bounce back.”
Hawkins was not part of the Brighton squad which defeated Swindon Town in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy match on Wednesday evening.
