I am not a quitter – Keane
December 1, 2008
Sunderland manager Roy Keane insists he will not walk away from his job at the Stadium of Light.
Keane admitted, in the wake of Saturday’s demoralising 4-1 defeat at home to Bolton Wanderers, that he has questioned whether he is the right man for the job.
That prompted feverish speculation that he was on the verge of walking out on the Black Cats, two-and-a-half seasons after taking charge on Wearside.
But the former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland captain, who has now seen his side lose six of their last seven games, has declared that he will not walk out on the task in hand.
He said: “People keep asking me about being a quitter and I don’t think I am a quitter. Anyone who’s played with me or worked with me would know I’m not. If you lose 4-1 at home, it’s obvious I haven’t done my job well enough.”
And Keane admits his side is now locked in the throes of a real relegation battle: “All the players have to do is look at the table. We certainly can’t go down the road of thinking we’re too good [to go down]. It doesn’t get any easier for us as our next game is [Manchester] United. So that’s a nice easy one.”
