McPhail diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
November 23, 2009
Cardiff City’s former Leeds United and Ireland midfielder Stephen McPhail faces extensive treatment having been diagnosed with a form of cancer.
McPhail will undergo three weeks of treatment to combat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, according to reports in Wales on Monday morning.
The 29-year-old Dubliner had a lump removed from his neck last month and was subsequently informed that he required further treatment for a rare form of lymphoma.
McPhail is currently sidelined by injury, from which he was scheduled to return early in the New Year, and at this stage the illness is not expected to keep him on the sidelines any longer than that.
Cardiff manager Dave Jones said: “He has had a torrid week but the news is the best he could probably get with the illness he has got.
“We were pleased with his news and when I spoke to him he was bouncing because it was really good news for him.
“He still has to have treatment but credit to our medical staff because they caught the problem at an early stage - and that is the most important thing for Steve and his family.”
