McShane’s Sunderland move edges closer
June 7, 2007
Sunderland manager Roy Keane is edging closer to the signing of Irish international defender Paul McShane from West Bromwich Albion.
McShane is tipped to move on this summer following the Baggies’ failure in last week’s Coca-Cola Championship play-off final.
And Keane – a former Manchester United teammate of the young Wicklow man – is the loudest voice in the race to sign the versatile 21-year-old.
Sunderland are in desperate need of new blood in the back line and McShane’s ability to fill various defensive roles – he has played exclusively at centre half for Ireland but at right back for West Brom – makes him an attractive proposition.
Keane is also said to be interested in Baggies left back Paul Robinson and attacking midfielder Jason Koumas.
