Denmark announce squad for Irish date


Denmark head coach Morten Olsen has named a strong 17-man squad for next week’s friendly international against the Republic of Ireland in Aarhus, including three Barclays Premier League players in his selection.

The Danes currently lie in fourth place in Euro 2008 Group F and face section leaders Sweden in a vital qualifier on September 8th.

Olsen has included Premiership-based central defenders Daniel Agger and Martin Laursen, as well as highly-rated Arsenal forward Nicklas Bendtner.

Other familiar faces include Jon Dahl Tomasson, once of Newcastle United and AC Milan, former Charlton Athletic winger Dennis Rommedahl and the ex-Rangers forward Peter Lovenkrands.

Denmark squad (v. Republic of Ireland, Aarhus, August 22nd 2007):

Goalkeepers: Jesper Christiansen (FC Copenhagen), Stephan Andersen (Brondby).

Defenders: Daniel Agger (Liverpool), Jan Kristiansen (FC Nurnberg), Kasper Bogelund (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Leon Andreasen (Werder Bremen), Martin Laursen (Aston Villa), Michael Gravgaard (FC Copenhagen), Niclas Jensen (FC Copenhagen).

Midfielders: Daniel Jensen (Werder Bremen), Dennis Rommedahl (Ajax Amsterdam), Rasmus Wurtz (FC Copenhagen), Thomas Kahlenberg (Auxerre), Jesper Gronkjaer (FC Copenhagen).

Forwards: Jon Dahl Tomasson (Villarreal), Nicklas Bendtner (Arsenal), Peter Lovenkrands (Schalke).

McCarthy marked out by old head on young shoulders

The indications from Irish assistant manager Marco Tardelli suggest James McCarthy could receive a debut call-up for next month’s friendly against Brazil. The 19-year-old has hit the headlines with a couple of goals for Wigan recently - but what really marks him out as something special is his maturity.
