I would have done the same – Duffer
November 20, 2009
Damien Duff has absolved Thierry Henry from blame for the incident which ended Ireland’s World Cup hopes – declaring that he would have done the same at the other end.
Duff was inconsolable at the end of one of his finest ever performances in an Ireland shirt.
The Fulham winger will be 34 by the time the next World Cup comes around in 2014 and may not get another chance to impress on the world stage like he did in Korea and Japan in 2002.
But he insists that the match officials – and not Henry – are to blame for Wednesday night’s debacle.
He said: “If it was down the other end and it was going out of play, I would have chanced my arm.
“You can’t blame him. He’s a clever player - but you expect the ref to see it, it was so blatant.”
