Cork advance
July 12, 2004
Cork City 1-0 NEC Nijmegen A Kevin Doyle strike saw Cork City through to the next round of the Intertoto Cup at the expense of Dutch side NEC Nijmegen on front of a packed out Turners’ Cross on Sunday afternoon.
The eircom Premier Division side are only the second Irish side to advance through three rounds of a European competition with Dundalk achieving a similar feat in 1979.
The Dutch side that are managed by the legendary Johan Neesken were overwhelming favourites for this tie but Cork showed great resilience and determination to book their place in the next round.
Pat Dolan’s side looked the livier of the two in the first half and they should have a penalty in the opening period when the referee failed to spot a blatant handball by a NEC defender.
Neale Fenn was a constant threat to the visitor’s defence and he nearly broke the deadlock when he broke through the Nijmegen defence only for the goalkeeper Dennis Gentenaar to rob the ball from his feet.
The second half began in whirlwind fashion as the Leesiders scored straight after the break with Danny Murphy finding George O’Callaghan who in turn crossed for Doyle to head into the corner of the net.
Cork did not sit back as many would have expected but poured forward in search of a second goal with top scorer John O’Flynn going close a few minutes later.
Nijmegen did make a few attacks on the Cork goal but they were dealt with comfortably by the home side’s defence and if anyone was going to score a second, Cork looked the more likelier.
Pat Dolan’s side now have a glamour tie with French side Nantes in the next round while they also booked their place in the Irish soccer history books.
Cork City: Devine, Lordan, Bennett, D Murray, Doyle, O’Brien, O’Callaghan, Kearney, Fenn (K Murray 90mins), O’Flynn.
