FULL-TIME: Lille OSC 2-0 Shelbourne
September 30, 2004
Follow all the minute-by-minute developments from the Stade Metropole in Lille on Thursday evening.
Lille OSC (4-4-1-1): Sylva – Angbwa, Rafael, Tavlaridis, Tafforeau – Landrin, Bodmer, Makoun, Audel – Acimovic – Moussilou.
Shelbourne (4-1-4-1): Williams – Heary, Harris, Rogers, Crawley – Crawford – Hoolahan, S. Byrne, Moore, Cahill – J. Byrne.
Referee: Emil Bozinovski (Macedonia).
0 min: There is a buzzing atmosphere in the Stade Metropole in Lille this evening – and there’s probably plenty of buzzing between Jason Byrne’s ears at the moment. He’s just been clattered in the first minute but the Macedonian referee sees no need to give a free.
2 mins: Lille have the ball in the net but the ball was well out of play before Moussilou cut it back.
7 mins: Foul by Dave Rogers just outside the angle of the area. Danger here, as some commentators may say.
8 mins: Acimovic curls it over the wall but it sails wide.
11 mins: Foul 35 yards out on Acimovic by Crawford, who, rather than Stuart Byrne, is picking up the playmaker. Acimovic dinks it to far post but Tavlaridis heads over under strong pressure from Stuart Byrne and Jamie Harris.
15 mins: Good chance wasted by Moussilou. Owen Heary caused the problem with a hasty clearance across his own penalty area, which is volleyed back into the centre. Moussilou anticipates the opening but is stretching and is unable to divert his effort on the target.
18 mins: GOAL! – Lille 1-0 Shels. Milenko Acimovic finds the net for the home side to leave the eircom League champs facing a massing uphill battle. Shels lost the ball in midfield, with Jim Crawford, the man briefed to mark Acimovic, lying prone on the turf as the French side break at pace. Acimovic peels away on the left to accept the pass and strokes an excellent finish into the far corner of the net.
20 mins: Acimovic is causing real problems – his corner smacks off the near post and rebounds away to safety.
26 mins: GOAL! – Lille 2-0 Shels. Matt Moussilou makes it 2-0 and Shels’ Uefa Cup hopes lie in shreds. A good advantage by referee Bozinovski results in Moussilou picking up possession. The young Frenchman hurdles the challenge of Dave Crawley, and his shot is deflected past Steve Williams by Jamie Harris’s outstretched leg.
31 mins: Acimovic sees another free kick dip past Williams’s right hand post. At the moment, Shels are unable to gain any meaningful possession, anywhere on the park.
37 mins: Alan Moore is taking a position further forward to join Jason Byrne but his biggest impression so far has been on the jaw of central defender Stathis Tavlaridis. The young Greek has received treatment but is – surprise, surprise – fit to continue.
45 mins: Half-time: Lille OSC 2-0 Shelbourne. The home side close out the half comfortably in command. Shels enjoyed a bit more possession in the final five minutes but were unable to carve out even a half-chance. Even Houdini would balk at this fix.
46 mins: No changes on either side at half-time. Pat Fenlon will wait before throwing the first leg’s two-goal hero, Glen Fitzpatrick, into the fray.
48 mins: Two more sights of rapid-fire front man Moussilou, but first Owen Heary with a tremendous covering tackle and then Steve Williams deny the Frenchman.
51 mins: Christophe Landrin, a scorer in the first leg, smacks a left-foot shot inches wide of Williams’s right hand post.
52 mins: Landrin is again involved from the right flank, teeing up Audel but the midfielder blazes over from 12 yards.
55 mins: Wes Hoolahan is seeing a bit more of the ball down the right, but Ollie Cahill on the opposite side and Jason Byrne up front can barely get a touch at the moment.
58 mins: Landrin and Moussilou break in a two-on-one situation as the Shels offside trap dissolves. But Jamie Harris, the man who played the pair onside in the first place, gets back to block the attempted cross.
62 mins: A massive comedy of errors. Wes Hoolahan gives the ball away in midfield, and Dave Rogers misdirects a header towards Steve Williams. Moussilou takes the ball around Williams but inexplicably scuffs his shot wide.
64 mins: Yellow card (Shelbourne). Alan Moore – dissent.
65 mins: Substitution (Shelbourne) - Glen Fitzpatrick for Alan Moore.
66 mins: Substitution (Lille OSC) - Philippe Brunel for Matt Moussilou.
75 mins: Yellow card (Lille OSC). Jean Makoun – ungentlemanly conduct.
75 mins: Yellow card (Shelbourne). Owen Heary – ungentlemanly conduct.
77 mins: Yellow card (Lille OSC). Gregory Tafforeau – foul on Glen Fitzpatrick.
79 mins: Still nothing doing for Shels. Fitzpatrick has joined with Byrne up front but the Irish side have been unable to carve out any openings. The home side look content to play out the final minutes, and avoid the similar lapses that blighted them at Lansdowne Road a fortnight ago.
80 mins: Substitution (Shelbourne) - Ger McCarthy for Wes Hoolahan.
83 mins: One of the few occasions on which home keeper Tony Sylva has had anything to do, but it’s still little more than a routine catch from a Dave Crawley cross.
84 mins: Substitution (Lille OSC) - Mathieu Chalme for Milenko Acimovic.
87 mins: Substitution (Shelbourne) - Alan Cawley for Stuart Byrne.
88 mins: Dave Crawley free kick forces a decent low stop from Sylva, the first real save the Senegal international has had to make all evening.
90 mins (+ 2): Substitution (Shelbourne) - Givarre Miralas for Mathieu Bodmer.
90 mins (+ 3): Full-time: Lille 2-0 Shelbourne - The final whistle goes at the Stade Metropole, amid a few verbal clashes between players and officials at pitchside. There can be no arguments about the result, though, as Lille continued their record of having kept clean sheets in all their home matches to date this season.
