Manager: Alan Mathews
Key player: Dessie Baker
Nickname: Town, Midlanders
Best odds: 33/1 (Paddy Power, Bet 365)
Last season: 5th

Longford Town have been one of the shining lights to the rest of the country, the blueprint for success for regional clubs. Just how far they have come can be gauged from the fact that there was a tangible disappointment with their performances last season, despite yet another top half finish.

The FAI Cup winners in the previous two campaigns and the League Cup victors in 2004, they relinquished both crowns last year, missing out on the Uefa Cup place that had become a regular staple of the midlanders’ diet over the past few years.

The off-season transfer merry-go-round has brought mixed news for Longford, with captain Barry Ferguson and popular goalkeeper Stephen O'Brien opting to join Bohemians and star defender Sean Dillon linking up with Shelbourne.

On the other hand, former Liverpool and Ireland under-21 defender Kevin Doherty impressed on loan at Waterford United last year and has a point to prove after being shown the door by Shels, and goalkeeper Seamus Kelly is a proven top-flight performer. Robbie Martin has signed from UCD to rejoin brother John and will hope to form a potent attacking axis with Andy Myler and Dessie Baker, who has been showing plenty of promise in pre-season.
