Irish soccer: Home > eircom League Premier Division > Shamrock Rovers > 2006 Season Preview

Manager: Pat Scully
Nickname: Hoops
Best odds: 2/1 (Stan James)
Last season: 11th (Premier Division)

All eyes will be on Scully and Co as Rovers try to take the First Division by the throat in their first season after relegation.

One of Ireland's most famous clubs, the Hoops could well be restored to an all-new Premier Division next season regardless of their performance this time around - their support base ranks as one of the largest and most committed in the country.

However, they will want to leave nothing to chance, and they are short odds to become champions in their only season in the second tier.

New captain Aidan Price, David O'Connor and Tadgh Purcell are among a half-dozen to have followed Scully from Kilkenny City, while Philip Sheppard was on loan at the Cats from St Patrick's Athletic last season. Willie Doyle, the former UCD and Bohemians striker, adds to a formidable young attacking line-up for Rovers this season, while defender Ger O'Brien and midfielder Gareth Cooney have experience of First Division football from a couple of seasons with Kildare County.
